Jules Gits was born in Izegem on December 12th, 1864. Doctor and father of 6, he lived in the Roeselaarsestraat with his wife Jeanne Paret. He wrote numerous plays and poems, and was an active politician in the catholic party in Izegem. During the war, he kept an extensive journal on the daily life in Izegem. Roland Garros was born in France on October 6th, 1988. He was a famous combat pilot during World War I.  On April 18th, 1915, Roland experienced technical difficulties while crossing the Sterre-forest in Rumbeke. He successfully performed an emergency landing close to the border between Ingelmunster and Hulste.
